We’re all familiar with the process when it is about the Oculus Storefront and its rigorous curation. This is how we ensure the quality of games and apps high, and prevent low-quality games from making it through. But, this also makes it difficult for independent developers to publish their VR content on the Oculus platform.
To combat this issue, Oculus recently announced a new program called “App Lab” to give independent developers a place to share their VR content without going through the rigorous curation process of the Oculus storefront. The App Lab is similar to the standard Oculus storefront in that you can browse and download apps the same way you would on a traditional virtual storefront but it’s not curated.
If your app does well in the App Lab in the App Lab, it may be pushed to the engaging stakeholders official Oculus storefront, where it will receive more exposure and an even larger audience. However this isn’t just based on the number of downloads, but also on other factors like retention metrics as well as long-term profits, the development team, etc.
If you’re looking to explore the full range of Oculus Quest apps, we recommend you enable developer mode on your Meta headset and try out App Lab. There are many exciting games and experiences to play, including popular non-games like Tilt Brush which turns your headset into an immersive art studio. There’s also a bunch of interesting VR media apps, like Quill Theater, which showcases an amazing community-created 6DoF animation and movie content.
